LIBRARY GIRL AT THE RUSKIN THEATER: Reading, March 10 ,2024

Susan Hayden‘s Library Girl series at the Ruskin Theater has been a hotbed of talent for many years, so it was was real pleasure to be asked to read from my memoir MOM’S SEARCH FOR MEANING on March 10, 2024 to a sold out show. To be featured with so many of LA’s incredible writers was a dream come true. Susan’s memoir NOW YOU ARE A MISSING PERSON is a gorgeous collection.

LOS ANGELES REVIEW OF BOOKS: ON EILEEN VORBACH COLLINS’ “LOVE IN THE ARCHIVES”

Child loss of any kind is a path I’d wish on no one, and child loss to suicide is something most of us cannot ponder for a second. Many parents do not have the luxury to not think about it, and the numbers are growing. From 2007 through 2021, suicide rates for Americans ages 10 to 24 rose 62%, according to the CDC.

So many more parents need the support of their communities, which means none of us have the luxury of not considering what it might be like to lose a child to suicide.

Collins’ stunning memoir-in-essays guides us through the life of suicide loss parent with clear, concise prose devoid of cliché. It was an enormous honor to review this gorgeous book for the prestigious LA Review of Books. I cannot recommend it highly enough. You can read it here. You can buy Collins’ book here.

SLATE: THE SUDC RESEARCH BREAKTHROUGH AND THE MIXED EMOTIONS THAT CAN FOLLOW NEW RESEARCH

A new NYU Langone study links Sudden Unexplained Death in Childhood (SUDC) to febrile seizures. While any potential correlation brings us a step closer to discovering the cause/s — and therefore treatments, screenings, and interventions — new breakthroughs in any disease can bring mixed emotions for families who lost someone pre-breakthrough. I wrote about it for Slate, where I was honored to have my story run as the lead story of the day. You can read it here.

OMG THE NYT!

I’m not going to lie: I nearly collapsed when my Tiny Love Story was accepted by the New York Times. It’s a lifelong dream to publish ANYTHING in the NYT and to have it run just a few days after USA Today and receiving the IAN Awards…well, it was a very good week! You can scroll down the page to read mine here. Special thanks to my eldest daughter for inspiring the story and taking the photograph.

USA TODAY COVERAGE

Thank you to USA Today editor David Oliver for running an excellent series on grief. It was an honor to share Alice’s story with the USA Today readership. You can read it here. Scroll down for my story.

CHICAGO, IL READING AND SIGNING EVENT AT SHEFFIELD’S

CHICAGO! I’m so excited, I could bust.

Many moons ago, when I lived in Chicago, I wrote volumes and volumes and never showed anyone. It was a solitary practice. Much of that writing happened at —or was inspired by —Sheffield’s Beer and Wine Garden and their extraordinary staff, all of whom were smarter and more interesting than anything else going on in town.

I couldn’t be happier to do a signing at one of my favorite places on Earth. Chicago in general, and Sheffield’s in particular, is where I became me. (Sorry, everyone.)

Sheffield’s was my Cheers and I was Cliff, in a long dress and motorcycle boots.

Not sure everyone will truly remember my name, but as Cliff says, “…if at first you don’t succeed, redefine success.”

Cheers!

or

Sheffield’s!

THANK YOU FOR SUCH A LOVELY SIGNING AND DONATING TO SCCC

Huge thanks to everyone who attended the July signing. There was reading, eating, fundraising, and signing and singing. I was honored to have Michael Koch — Executive Director of Southern California Counseling Center speak for a few minutes about the great work SCCC does in the community. Delicious tacos by Jose’s Kitchen Catering were available for a small donation to SCCC. After I read a couple passages from Mom’s Search for Meaning, I signed books while Una serenaded us with their groovy tunes. Huge thanks to Chef Tad Weyland for helping out, Jim and Jen Nice for providing their home and extra thanks to Jen for providing her band! I am lucky to have such a beautiful community around me. Thank you all.

LA BOOK SIGNING JULY 30, 2023!

It seems impossible that Alice would be 12 this year or that she’s been gone for an entire decade. I hope you can join us as we celebrate Alice’s life and Melissa’s new book “Mom’s Search for Meaning” about her journey after Alice died (A.A.D.).

We are delighted to announce that Michael Koch — executive director of the Southern California Counseling Center, which saved Melissa’s bacon — will be on hand to say a few words before Melissa’s short reading. And we are thrilled that the dreamy trip-hop trio Una will serenade us with their dulcet sounds as Melissa signs books, kids blow bubbles, and everyone eats tacos.

Yes, there will be tacos! Melissa promised to do a book signing at a taco truck, and she is true to her word! Taco plates will be available for a $15 donation directly to SCCC. You will be able to pay by QR code at the event.

You can bring your own copy of MSFM, or there will be a limited number for sale at the event. Please let us know if you need to purchase one at the event so we have enough on hand.

Thank you for always remembering Alice and for your ongoing support.

The Gala can be attended in-person or virtually. Tickets are available at the link below.
